Job Description
Who You Are
As the Zero Waste Program Manager, you will lead the Zero Waste team, evolving its vision, objectives and strategies. Through your leadership of a team of zero waste professionals, you will advocate for, develop and direct the implementation of leading zero waste policies and programs to eliminate waste being sent to landfills and incineration and conserve resources through responsible production, consumption, and management of materials. You will create incentives and collaborate on outreach with other SF Environment teams, city departments and a wide range of organizations and leaders to expand and increase San Francisco’s zero waste efforts. The position also helps secure program funding and manages the budget for the team. You will lead the charge on cutting edge initiatives across the state and field inquiries from around the world.
The Zero Waste Program Manager reports to the Director of SF Environment and serves as part of the department’s leadership team. This position will oversee at least 15 staff plus fellows and interns.
Responsibilities include:
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
Lead the development and execution of zero waste goals, policies and programs equitably across all San Francisco sectors, including, but not limited to residential, commercial, local government, and construction &
demolition;
Develop clear objectives and actions centered around striving for waste prevention (elimination of waste at the source and reuse), recycling and composting (source separation),the highest and best use of resources, and elimination of landfilling and incineration;
Measure, evaluate, and report progress to increase effectiveness of SF Environment’s zero waste policies and programs;
Provide zero waste expertise and lead a team of zero waste professionals, providing clear direction, team cohesion, and mentorship;

Oversee related budgets, contracts and grants while developing processes to improve administrative efficiencies, accountability, and collaboration;
Collaborate across other environmental program areas in the department to ensure zero waste initiatives complement and enhance the department’s broader goals;
Integrate racial, social, and environmental justice issues into all aspect of program management and team leadership;
and
Serve as a principal departmental representative for local, regional, state, federal, and international organizations on zero waste and other environmental issues as needed.

Supervision Exercised
Position manages the Zero Waste team, including direct supervision of Class 5642 Senior Environmental Specialists in the city government, commercial, residential, and construction &
demolition debris sectors.
