We bring the strength of more than 100 years of experience and renowned engineering expertise to meet the needs of today’s mission and stay ahead of tomorrow’s threat. Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world.
Tool Engineering is a career field that specializes in designing custom mechanical solutions to support manufacturing, assembly, machine tools, inspection, and test throughout the product lifecycle. Tooling Engineers are the subject matter experts who provide innovative fixturing, gages, automation and machine design solutions. The use of these items provides a consistent, safe, ergonomic means to assemble, lift, and transport production hardware. Tool Engineers use computer aided design technology to generate 3-dimensional models and technical drawing packages. Tool Engineers are responsible for all aspects of designing, documentation, procuring and integrating assembly Tooling into a highly complex manufacturing environment. Tool Engineers oversee projects from development to implementation and strive to incorporate safe, ergonomic, error-proofed, and innovative solutions into the factory.

What You Will Do
Work independently and/or under limited supervision, and act as the responsible engineer for entire tooling system design efforts. This often requires the ability to lead major tooling projects, including:
directing, delegating and reviewing the work of others, acting as the primary POC, and regularly reporting status.

Independently develop complex 3-dimensional tooling solutions, including machine and automation design, using CREO (Pro-E).

Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on using ANSYS.

Mentoring and technically guiding junior team members in creation of tool designs.

Approval authority for complex 3-dimensional tooling solutions using CREO (Pro-E).

Capture and communicate tooling solutions with manufacturing, factory, and program leadership.

Lead opportunities for improvement within our factories.

Represent manufacturing as a mechanical engineering resource to support a variety of factory initiatives.

Promote standardized fixturing concepts across all programs to support a true multi-program factory environment.

Interpret and read mechanical engineering drawings including the usage of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&
T).

Establish designs with significant consideration given to good error-proofing techniques.

Integrate Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components to increase design usability and cost effectiveness.

Adjust designs as necessary to meet stakeholder needs.

Optimize designs through proper selection of raw materials and finishes.

Troubleshoot, diagnose and analyze design flaws and production issues.

Follow and support established guidelines regarding drawing layouts and release procedures.

Provide oversight and direction on topics including design risk and opportunities, budget, schedule, error-proofing, safety, ergonomics, manufacturability, materials, and coatings.
