Position Purpose:
The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and repair of multi fuel engine generators associated with onsite Wastewater Treatment plant power generation. This also includes associated auxiliary equipment, to include pumps, aerators etc. The incumbent will possess a working knowledge of electrical and control systems and have reached a high level of competency within a specific trade or discipline but will have a functioning ability level in multiple areas. The incumbent will be responsible to guide and train less experienced personnel in areas of expertise.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
Repair and maintain pumps, valves, motors, and other process equipment associated with wastewater treatment plant powered by on site multi fuel engine generators.
Set up and proficiently operate machine tools to design, make and repair mechanisms and equipment, such as shafts, bushings, sleeves, gears, bearings, and other related parts as assigned.
Fabricate parts and/or install, adjust, dismantle, and reassemble machines and plant equipment.
Set up and proficiently operate various tools including, but not limited to lathes, contour saws, cutoff saws, hand/bench/surface grinders, milling machines, spray welders, gas welders and various hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
Operate and use hoists, lifts, air hammers, masonry drills, grinders, welders and cutting equipment and other power and hand tools to safety accomplish assigned tasks.
Study specifications such as blueprints, electrical schematics, line diagrams, sketches and/or descriptions of parts to be replaced, and plan sequence of operations.
Perform preventative and corrective maintenance of auxiliary wastewater treatment plant equipment associated with onsite power generation. Equipment may include air compressors, gas compressors, sewage pumps, various heat exchangers (steam or hot water) etc.…
Maintain computerized work orders and records as directed.
Provide assistance and direction to less experienced mechanics and/or assigned helpers.
May provide support to other skilled trades employees.
Responsible for general housekeeping of maintenance shop, job sites, work areas and other areas as assigned including, but not limited to sweeping, dusting, mapping, cleaning and painting as necessary to maintain areas to Company standards.
Observes all on-the-job safety regulations.
Other related tasks as assigned.
Maintaining and Repairing Multi-fuel Diesel Engines and associated equipment.
The following ancillary maintenance tasks are performed to maintain the reliability of the engines:
Check outboard bearing oil level add as necessary.
Check engine driven fuel pump for leaks and coupling wear.
Check oil/sludge levels in the intake filter clean/change as necessary.
Wipe clean and lubricate fuel cut off cylinders, intake air cut off air dampers, gas governor actuator and waste gate actuator control rods.
Check the fuel pump rack setting record the readings.
Record spin down time on the turbo charger.
Check hydraulic lifters, adjust if necessary.
Inspect air intake manifold, clean as necessary.
Check the B/A turbo oil pump air supply filter, drain and clean as necessary.
Test over speed shut down.
Change oil in the B/A lube oil pump reduction.
Crank case inspection.
Crankcase and ledges for debris.
Check piston pin and connecting rod bolts for tightness.
Check lower cylinder seal and liner for wear or leaks.
Check waste gate bolts for tightness and position of the waste gate.
Back flush the governor cooler.
Change the governor lube oil.
Check all panel alarm for functionality.
Grease all engine fuel oil linkage and waste gate linkage
Change main injection nozzles.
Drain, flush, and refill the outboard bearing.
Check lower journal bearing clearance.
The following are examples of repair tasks the power plant mechanics might encounter when troubleshooting the multi-fuel diesel engines:
Blown head gasketUsing wrenches and power tools, remove valve cover.
Using wrenches, remove head from engine.
Remove damaged head gasket.
Inspect head and valves for damage.
Inspect piston and chamber for damage.
Using scraper and solvent, clean contact surface of engine and head.
Install new head gasket.
Reinstall head using wrenches and torque bolts to O&
M specifications.
Clogged/non-functioning injector nozzleClean area around the injector nozzle.
Using wrenches, remove fuel line from injector.
Remove injector and fit plastic cap over the injector inlet to eliminate contamination.
Using a pressure tester, test the functionality of the injector.If the injector tests clogged, clean out the injector and test again.
If the injector fails pressure, replace injector.
Exhaust leakUsing wrenches and power tools, start at the front of the engine, remove the sections of the exhaust header until the area of the leak is reached.
Remove the damaged section
Replace the damage section with a new exhaust section. Use new gasket when reinstalling exhaust sections.
May perform both ancillary and corrective maintenance tasks on the following associated equipment.

Natural gas, biogas, fuel and pneumatic systems.
Work Environment:
Work is performed both inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
Candidate may be occasionally exposed to some noise, silica, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, grease, oils, electrical energy, solvents and vibration.
Candidate may work on slippery/uneven surfaces, around machinery with moving parts, moving objects/vehicles, ladder/scaffolding, below ground and may be exposed to water or other liquid materials.
