Project summary:
The California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) is part of a statewide initiative to address and mitigate the effects of climate change. CCAC matches Fellows with organizations to mobilize community members to take direct climate action through education, volunteer mobilization, and assessment focused on urban greening, organic waste diversion, edible food recovery, and wildfire resiliency. This is a climate-focused, workforce development program for emerging climate and environmental leaders.
Opportunity description:
Located amidst the breathtaking beauty of Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe faces significant wildfire risks, underscored by its designation as a 'Very High' fire severity zone. The recent Caldor Fire evacuation highlighted the urgency for robust wildfire resilience initiatives. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) spearheads a defensible space program, emphasizing education and compliance inspections. Wildfire Resiliency Fellows at SLTFR will lead the development of an expansive outreach campaign, fostering community engagement and advocacy for defensible space and home hardening. Through collaborative efforts and impactful education, Fellows will empower residents to fortify their homes, share vital wildfire preparedness information, and cultivate a resilient network across the community. Craft wildfire preparedness resources, recruit and train volunteers, and let 's collaborate to strengthen South Lake Tahoe's resilience against future wildfire threats.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Spearhead the development of a comprehensive outreach campaign for defensible space and home hardening initiatives.
Create engaging campaign materials, including graphics, social media posts, and literature, to effectively convey wildfire resilience and preparedness messaging.
Recruit, train, and mobilize volunteers to advocate for wildfire resiliency, facilitating community engagement and climate action.
Collaborate with defensible space inspectors to report on structures lacking violations, enhancing compliance efforts and community safety.

Requirements and qualifications:
Requirements:
Live in California by August 16, 2024
Must be age 18 or older by August 16, 2024
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful US resident to participate
Preferred qualifications:
An interest in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service
Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change
Fundamental understanding of climate change science, environmental policies in California, and/or environmental priorities
Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills
