Evenings and some weekends.
Under the direct supervision of Medical Technologist or other appropriate designated personnel, performs clerical duties and draws blood from patients for analysis or other medical purposes.
Verifies records and identity of patient or donor and converses with patient to allay fear of procedure.
Efficiently registers patients. Enter orders into computer.
Performs routine venipunctures while observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood specimens.
Collects specimens within one hour of request (STAT orders immediately) and labels blood specimens as soon as specimen is collected.
Prepare outpatient charts for medical records making sure that all tests have been ordered, performed and finalized. Prepares paperwork for sample send-outs to reference laboratories.
Ensure that results have been received from the reference laboratory. Original copies go immediately to the patient chart (in-patients) and copies are faxed to the ordering physician as well as to nursing homes, home health, etc.. Follow-up with reference lab daily on any outstanding testing.
Keeps track of supplies and, notifies Director when supplies are low. Stocks the shelves and refrigerators when supplies arrive. Mark packing ship/order printout with date of receipt.
Must be able to demonstrate competency in all procedures within scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served;
must be able to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs;
must demonstrate a knowledge of growth and development and an understanding of the range of treatments needed by these patients to include infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
Assembles equipment such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
Performs such other tasks as assigned by the Lead Laboratory Technologist.
Maintain monthly continuing education articles and mandatory inservices.
Assures that all tasks performed are in compliance with related state and federal guidelines, rules and regulations.
Abides by Yoakum Community Hospital policies and procedures as set forth in the Employee Handbook.
Requirements
Phlebotomy Certification required. One (1) to two (2) years experience preferred. Must be proficient in collecting specimens from all age ranges - newborn to geriatric. Adequate computer skills and specimen processing required.
