The Center for Victims of Torture works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We offer rehabilitation services to those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota, and we have US offices in Georgia and DC, as well as offices in Africa and the Middle East.

Remote status:
Hybrid (60% in-person, 40% remote) – subject to change
Full/part-time status:
Full-time;
some evening/weekend hours based on client needs
Pay starts at:
$50,607
Position is open to candidates who reside in and are eligible to work in the US and will not need CVT to sponsor them on a work visa;
qualified candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to Minnesota
Community and Peer Education:
Collaborate with CVT multidisciplinary team and other resettlement organizations staff to deliver trauma-informed psychoeducation sessions and groups for Afghan individuals, parents, caregivers, community leaders and other stakeholders. Plan and implement community events that build awareness of behavioral health and wellness for the Afghan community. Topics may include general psychoeducation, impact of trauma, stress management, building resiliency, accessing resources, and navigating systems such as schools, health care. Meet with individuals and families to provide education, increase awareness, and encourage help-seeking behavior.
Curriculum Development:
Develop training and workshop materials, including presentations, handouts, and flyers. Work with interpreters to translate documents to various languages and coordinate distribution of informational materials through education events, health fairs.
Partnership Building and Training:
Engage with and build partnerships with strategic community partners in order to create pathways for reaching Afghan survivors impacted by combat and their family members. Assess the needs of partners and align services to represent community needs. In partnership with the multidisciplinary team and ACS, create systems for community activity engagement/enrollment and outcomes assessment. Train external providers to build capacity for serving Afghan community members. Participate in outreach activities such as health fairs, town halls, etc.
Qualifications:
Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations
Ability to speak one or more of the following languages:
Dari or Pashto
Experience leading groups and workshops for diverse populations
Demonstrated professional experience working with refugee or immigrant populations
Demonstrated experience coordinating and facilitating community-based activities
Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations
1 year of experience providing services to Afghans
Demonstrated experience coordinating and facilitating community-based activities
Demonstrated experience building relationships with local community members
Competencies (knowledge, skills and abilities)
Interest in behavioral and mental health issues;
ability to discuss and address topics of mental health without judgment or stigma.
Highly relational interpersonal style, including ability to build relationships with a variety of stakeholders in order to advance the mission of CVT
Ability to gather, listen to, and be responsive to community needs
Knowledge or interest in working with the Afghan community
Ability to work independently;
including working remotely and out in the community
Ability to develop and maintain professional, collaborative relationships
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, including the ability to communicate consistently and reliably in a remote work environment
Skilled at adapting written and verbal content to a wide variety of audiences
Skilled at coping with emotionally stressful situations
Commitment to engaging in human rights work, and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within the organization
Excellent skills in organization, attention to detail and time management (including the ability to meet deadlines)
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality, recognize appropriate boundaries
Work Environment (subject to change):
Community workshops may occur in partner locations and in the community. Some education sessions might occur in the clinic with clients and/or family members
Time spent on the computer is approximately 40%
Time spent in virtual meetings 20%
Travel to a variety of locations in the Twin Cities metro area up to 15% time
