Job Description
The Manager of High School Support works with KIPP Baltimore alumni who are in the 9th and 10th grade as they begin their high school careers and prepare for their post-secondary options. The Manager of High School Support builds meaningful relationships with students while helping alumni navigate the academic and socio-emotional transition to high school. The Manager of High School Support also facilitates students’ exploration of personal interests and strengths, guiding students as they start to match their passions to possible careers and postsecondary pathways. The Manager of High School Support reports to the Director of KIPP Forward.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Manager of High School Support responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Supporting a caseload of approximately 180 9th and 10th grade students with their academic and socio-emotional transition to high school and early college and career exploration (65%)
Conduct outreach and form authentic relationships with students and their families using strategies such as:
High school visits
Cold calls to students and families
Text messages
Emails
Utilize motivational interviewing skills to engage students in problem solving and confidence-building advising conversations.
Stay in contact (calling, texting, visiting) with alumni to monitor their progress and troubleshoot challenges.
Hold 1:
1 transcript review and goal-setting meetings.
Engage students in early career and college exploration through discussion, analysis of career surveys, and research.
Implement programming (i.E. guest speaker series, college tours, alumni panels, college workshops) to aid career and college exploration.
Provide opportunities for alumni to connect with each other and KIPP Baltimore staff through social and skill-developing events and programming.
Connect alumni with community and campus resources that will help them meet their individual goals including tutors, mentors, internships, mental health supports, etc.
Develop relationships with staff in local high schools and community organizations
Planning and implementing the College Knowledge and Career Success (CKCS) lesson series with the 8th grade class (15%)
Use the lesson framework provided by the KIPP Foundation to plan lessons that help 8th graders identify possible career interests and post-secondary pathways as they prepare for high school.
Push into 8th grade classrooms to teach the lessons and to form relationships with rising 9th graders.
Track student progress and analyze student work, adjusting lessons and offering remediation and individualized support as needed so that student performance goals are met.
Managing the KIPP High School Peer Mentoring program (15%)
Recruit 9th grade alumni mentees and 11th grade mentors at partner high schools
Train mentors and provide on-going support and development opportunities
Schedule consistent on-site mentoring group sessions at the high schools
Co-plan and co-facilitate group mentoring sessions with the 11th grade mentors
Foster relationship between partner high schools and KIPP Forward
Engage in evaluation and review of program, implement changes and innovations
Collecting and analyzing alumni data (5%)
Manage alumni data in the KIPP Database including contact notes and contact information
Participate in alumni data analysis meetings, inclusive of regional match meetings
Regularly review caseload data and progress toward goals, then use the analysis to inform strategy and next steps
Serving as a full-time and engaged member of KIPP Baltimore’s staff.
Meet regularly with the KIPP Forward Director as well as the KIPP Forward Team.
Develop positive, appropriate relationships with current students and alumni as well as with fellow staff members
Support team events such as alumni reunions
Attend, and actively participate in, all regional staff meetings
Other duties as assigned by KIPP Forward Director
