Job Description
Under general direction, this position is responsible for planning, assigning, dispatching and supervising the activities of heavy equipment operators, truck drivers and work crews in the repair, maintenance and clean up needs of the City Distribution Division and performs related duties as required.
Requires responsibility for interpreting, enforcing and carrying out policies and procedures relative to the operation of construction equipment and construction, and maintenance and repair projects;
making regular contactswith other departmental personnel, contractors and others in connection with construction, maintenance and equipment operation matters;
advising on earth moving and similar construction projects using assigned heavy equipment;
preparing and reviewingoperating records and reports. Requires ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work of road and grounds maintenance crews operating in scattered locations;
maintain effective relationships with private contracting firms, other city departments and the public.
Essential Functions:
1. Plans, assigns, supervises and lays out the work of subordinate supervisors, heavy equipment operators and work crews and may personally supervise earth moving in road, path and other maintenance and repair operations.
2. Responds to maintenance, repair and clean-up needs of the department.
3. Makes estimates of aggregates and other materials and supplies necessary to maintenance and repair activities.
4. Assists in the preparation of and makes recommendations for annual budget requirements.
5. Acts in advisory capacity with respect to earth-moving or construction projects under the jurisdiction of the department.
6. Inspects proposed work and makes recommendations on the use of heavy equipment.
7. Acts as dispatcher for drivers and vehicles.
8. Maintains records of maintenance and repair activities, including projected work schedules, equipment maintenance and repair, materials and supplies consumed;
keeps accurate inventory of equipment.
9. Recommends purchase of heavy construction equipment as well as rolling stock.
10. Confers with representatives of other units of the Department with respect to earth-moving, construction and other activities pertinent to the Maintenance Division.
11. Trains subordinate personnel including the facilitation of safety meetings.
12. Performs related duties as assigned.
Nature of the work:
This position is required to work on holidays and weekends to respond to emergencies and planned maintenance activities.
