Job Summary:
The Finance Manager will manage the firm's accounting, client billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and financial reporting, acting as a trusted partner to the firm's partners and COO. This hybrid position is available in our Chicago, Washington, D.C., or New York office and reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
Primary Responsibilities:
Generate monthly financial reports and report significant variances promptly.
Implement changes in procedures, policies, and systems to minimize risk and support growth.
Analyze data to derive insights and inform strategic recommendations.
Oversee accounts payable/receivable transactions, controls, and accounting procedures.
Ensure accuracy and completeness of semi-monthly and monthly payroll files.
Maintain organized and current financial files for the COO, partners, auditors, and others.
Lead the annual budgeting process and collaborate with functional leaders to create budgets.
Manage monthly and quarterly closing processes.
Prepare journal entries and perform reconciliations, including partner equity accounts.
Oversee cash flow and bank transfers with COO oversight.
Manage billing, vendor, and user data in accounting and expense systems.
Process client payments accurately, ensuring correct application to client bills.
Provide support for ad-hoc financial analysis, modeling, and special projects.
Become proficient in Power BI, ProLaw, and other financial platforms.
Cross-train with the COO on payroll and treasury management to cover in their absence.
Experience &
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field, with 4-5 years of accounting/finance experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a law firm and prior management/supervisory experience.
Proficiency in coding transactions and handling routine budget and compensation queries.
Experience in financial management, compensation, and budgeting within a mid-sized organization.
Familiarity with ProLaw, Aderant Expert Sierra, and Power BI preferred.
Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Self-driven with the ability to anticipate needs and follow through with minimal direction.
Effective communicator with the ability to present information to partners, attorneys, staff, and external stakeholders.
Advanced skills in Excel and ability to quickly learn new tools and systems.
Proven ability to drive process improvements and efficiencies.
Excellent time management and project management skills.
