The Navajo Immersion Teacher will be a regular classroom teacher at the elementery level but will provide instruction in the Arizona Standards using the Navajo Language. This position requires that the teacher be fluent in speakig, reading and wriing in the Navajo Language.
Instructs, demonstrates, informs, performs, directs, and repeats as needed for pupil learning in the assigned area utilizing the course of study adopted by the Department of Diné Education and Arizona Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities in the Diné language.
Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in tribal and state laws, administrative regulation, and procedures of the school district in the Diné language.
Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
Turns lesson plans into learning experiences in order to best utilize available time for instruction.
Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil’s progress and interpret the school program.
Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
Creates an effective environment for learning through culturally appropriate functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers in the Diné language.
Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrators to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
Selects and requisitions culturally appropriate books and instructional aids and maintains required inventory records.
Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
Administers group and individual standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program.
Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.
Is responsible for continuing the learning of all students.
Is familiar with and uses of Professional Learning Community Schools.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Arizona Department of Education State Certification requirements are:
Teaching certificate in elementary or secondary area and Native American Language Certificate;
A passing score of the elementary professional, subject knowledge and early childhood professional knowledge of the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessment (AEPA) (early childhood endorsement is required for PreK-12th Grades);
Navajo Bilingual or ESL endorsement or Structured English Immersion (SEI).
Holds a valid Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Card.
Three years of teaching experience (preferred).
Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking in the Diné language.
Must have a proven successful employment record.
REQUIRED for High School Diné Studies Teacher - Master’s Degree in Bilingual/Multicultural Education required (to meet the Dual Credit enrollment requirements).
