As the Head Coach for Middlebury College Crew Club, provides coaching services to both the Men’s and Women’s Crew Club. Responsibilities include attending and supervising all practices and competitions, offering guidance during travel and competitions, and assisting club members in refining their rowing technique to enhance their performance throughout both fall and spring competitive seasons.
In addition to coaching duties, as the Assistant Director of Annual Giving, Club Sports Fundraising, coordinates and oversees engagement efforts to foster relationships with Middlebury constituents, with a focus on Club Sport alumni and parents. Drives annual participation gifts and leadership-level Annual Fund contributions while recruiting, training, and supporting fundraising volunteers. There will be a high level of flexibility to adjust between both roles as needed throughout the year based on team season/schedule, events, and various priorities.
This is a full time, exempt, benefits eligible role with a hiring midpoint target of $50,000 and is aligned with.
Core Responsibilities:
Head Crew Club Coach- 80%
Mentor the Club’s membership as both competitive athletes and campus leaders, and the Club’s officers in organizational management and leadership.
Design and supervise all practice activities and training programs to ensure safety and effectiveness as well as develop the vision, goals, and strategic plan for the program.
Attend all club practices and assist in the coordination of competitions serving as the club’s primary on-site risk manager.
Work with the Office of Sports Medicine to ensure all medical clearance requirements are adhered to without exception.
Serve as equipment manager:
provide maintenance and repairs for the full fleet of crew boats and equipment, manage equipment selection and procurement, oversee all equipment readiness, winterization, and storage.
Supervise assistant coaches, develop schedule based on available budget, provide thorough description of practice responsibilities, tasks, and goals, provide feedback and evaluation on a frequent and consistent basis.
Assist student club leaders with scheduling competitions and practices in accordance with college and league policies and oversee the club president and team captains and assist them in fulfilling their administrative obligations in conjunction with the Club Sports’ Liaison.
Coordinate, in partnership with the Office of College Advancement, fundraising efforts to support club operations.
Act as the primary administrative support for the team including setting the overall budget for the team, working in partnership with the Director of Student Involvement and Leadership Development to oversee the use of Crew’s endowed funds, registering boats and line ups for competitions, and serving as the liaison between Crew and the Office of Student Engagement.
Assistant Director of Annual Giving, Club Sports Fundraising- 20%
Conduct 1:
1 and small group visits with prospects and volunteers for assessment, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship via digital outreach and travel, as allowed by Crew schedule.
Manage at least one defined group for special project fundraising, including but not limited to Reunion classes;
recruit and manage fundraising volunteers, fueling committee momentum, and fundraising success.
Recruit, train fundraising volunteers who conduct peer to peer solicitations with classmates.
Build and advance strong professional relationships with alumni, parents and friends of Middlebury that result in philanthropic contributions.
Collaborate extensively with annual giving, leadership gifts, planned gifts, principal gifts, and the alumni office on successful prospect engagement, cultivation, and solicitation.
Maintain in-depth knowledge of Middlebury’s priorities and be well versed in Middlebury’s academic, co-curricular and student life programming.

Requirements
Bachelors degree required
Minimum 3 years coaching experience, preferably at the collegiate level and a US Rowing Level 2 coaching certification, or the ability to obtain in the near future.
Boating license, or the ability to obtain in the near future.
Emergency medicine training, or the ability to obtain in the near future.
Current State of VT DOT Physical, or the ability to obtain in the near future.
Commitment to Student Development through sportsmanship, teamwork and camaraderie.
Highly collaborative team player with excellent leadership, communication, organization and interpersonal skills
Experience in Development or related field preferred
Handles confidential materials with discretion
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Flexible schedule and available to work nights and weekends as needed. Ability and willingness to travel extensively via air and public transport. Rowing is a physically demanding activity, requiring lifting of heavy objects, work in extreme weather conditions, and in and around water. Also requires work in a traditional office setting that involves mainly work at a desk and computer.
