Job Summary

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is primarily responsible for related comprehensive strategic planning, implementation, management, and oversight of all fundraising and donor relations activities across the council with staff assigned in this functional area. The CDO will manage day-to-day fundraising operations including research and prospect identification, cultivation and communications strategies, proposal development, grant application writing and tracking, solicitations strategies, donor stewardship, database management, communications and outreach activities, and development-related volunteer relations. While reporting to the CEO, the CDO works collaboratively and maintains clear and regular communications with the council’s Board of Directors and Fund Development Committee, volunteer leadership and donor prospects. This position is designated as safety sensitive.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads a team to develop, manage and evaluate all phases of internal and external fundraising programs including:
    annual giving, donor solicitations, special events, capital campaigns, foundation/grant requests, and planned giving.
  • Manages a portfolio of current donors and develops prospects for cultivation with the goal of attaining a specified annual fundraising goal.
  • Responsible for coordinating fundraising campaigns and identifying sources for funding including individuals, corporations, events, and United Way to meet annual giving, capital campaign, and planned giving goals.
  • Develop and administer annual fund development tactical plan and monitor to ensure that fund raising goals are met.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive donor recognition program and provide timely gift acknowledgements.
  • Maintains accurate financial and donor records ensuring they are reconciled monthly with the accounting records.
  • Develop and implement strategies to strengthen the image of Girl Scouting;
    and to raise awareness of the need for public support.
  • Ensures that Planned Giving is an integral part of the Council’s fund development efforts.
  • Prepares the annual Fund Development budget and works closely with the CFO on monthly variances.
  • Provides advice, support, and technical assistance to the Board of Directors and its Fund Development Committee in carrying out its fund development goals.
  • May be assigned safety and security leadership roles to assist in the protection of employees and property in the event of emergencies.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on business administration, management or marketing communications, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful fund development and program/people management experience.
  • Experience in planning and coordinating events for large numbers of participants.
  • Experience using data management systems such as Raisers Edge, SalesForce, etc.
  • Experience developing budgets and preparing reports.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent critical thinking and interpersonal skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ease of speaking to large groups.
  • Knowledge and experience of fund raising and business management strategies and techniques.

Physical and Schedule Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to access various departments of a given location.
