Job Description
Under direction, as an Asphalt Finisher Supervisor I, you will assist in the planning, inspection, coordination, implementation, and monitoring of activities related to street resurfacing and asphalt maintenance and repair. You will supervise the activities of a crew that performs work on streets, roads, construction, and maintenance projects. You will also perform as a working supervisor on an asphalt crew and be responsible for quarterly review and evaluation of employees’ performances.
Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties as an Asphalt Finisher Supervisor I may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervise and participate in locating, marking, and paving traffic control devices as part of a paving crew while ensuring that the traffic control devices meet standard specifications within accepted tolerances.
Supervise a crew that performs work milling, resurfacing, spreading and finishing asphalt on streets, roads, excavations, construction or maintenance projects.
Plan and prioritize work by conferring with Street Repair Supervisor II, departmental representatives, trades workers, and technical experts to establish workflow and meet production targets.
Prepare estimates of timeframes needed for crew to complete work and costs for labor, materials and supplies, based on size and nature of project.
Inspect maintenance, repair and construction projects to determine quality assurance and compliance with codes and contract specifications.
Enforce safety codes and procedures such as CalOSHA, the Code of Safe Work Practices, and other Federal, State, local and departmental codes and procedures to ensure compliance with safety requirements on project.
Ensure that barricades and warning lights are in place on work in progress and that projects are properly cleaned up after work is completed.
Prepare and maintain records of employees' daily work assignments and time worked, location and description of completed jobs, employee performance reviews, injury and incident reports, purchase orders for equipment and supplies, inventories, budget records and may approve electronic records of time worked for payroll purposes.
Respond to inquiries and complaints, either orally or in writing;
may request inspection of materials, equipment, records, or site to determine the nature of the problem.
Use a two-way radio and cell phone to communicate with coworkers, supervisors, and management regarding work details, locations, and emergency notifications.
Drive a motor vehicle to travel to job sites, attend meetings and transport materials.
Assume the duties of a second-line supervisor as needed.
Working Conditions:
The nature of the work may require the use of a respirator when working on a grinding crew, resurfacing a street, or operating a jackhammer.
