SUMMARY:
The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating lathes to perform a series of machining operations such as turning, boring, threading and facing on metal workpieces such as castings, forgings and bar stock. He/She should be detail oriented and possess strong time management skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The CNC Lathe Machinist must demonstrate competence in the following areas.
Produces quality parts on CNC lathes.
Loads parts, proves programs, operates controls, sets offsets, performs simple edits, deburrs and inspects quality of parts for conformance to requirements.
Studies and interprets drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and set-up requirements.
Measures and marks dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces as a guide for subsequent machining.
Detects equipment malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjusts machine, within capabilities, controls or control media as required to ensure quality of production. Reports all machine malfunctions to immediate supervisor.
Communicates with supervisor, engineers, production control, quality and other shop employees for assignments and to resolve machining or quality issues.
Keeps equipment and work area clean and orderly and performs basic preventative maintenance functions on equipment.
Adheres to and complies with state and federal law, Company policies and safety and environmental regulations within the scope of the job requirements.
Selects, aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials.
Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow and depth and angle of cut or enters commands to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine control media.
Verifies dimensions of machined workpiece with such measuring instrument as micrometers, telescoping gauges, vernier calipers, and dial indicators. Works to tolerance of plus or minus 0.0005 inch.
Performs self-inspection of parts to verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
Participates in continuous improvement initiatives including but not limited to Lean.
Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned at the discretion of the Machine Shop Supervisor.
Requirements
EDUCATION/JOB EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
One-year machining certificate from college or technical school preferred.
A minimum of six months related experience and/or training preferred.
Wire EDM and/or 5 Axis preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of reading drawings and specifications with an understanding of geometric tolerance and dimensions.
Knowledge of tool holders, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts and other accessories used on various machines.
Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
Must possess basic math skills to include but not limited to adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometry and algebra for the purpose of calculating material fabrication.
Knowledge and application of precision measuring instruments.
Willing to run multiple machines independently or in a team environment.
